The Gamewell Diaphone Fire Horn!

The Diaphone horn is the most distinct sounding horn ever used for fire and emergency services. If you grew up in Western Nassau County it's safe to say you are well familiar with their sounds.

Introduced by the Gamewell Company in 1909 the Diaphone quickly became the most popular alerting device among volunteer fire departments. The Diaphone would blow out coded blasts corresponding to the box alarm and fire location. 2 blasts at noon or 6PM are common. Also the horns were used to notify the community of school closings on snow days.  In later years, around the 1980's, many departments set a standard code for either fire or rescue. Example would be 3-3-3-3 for rescue and 4-4-4-4 for fire.
