H.O.R. Sirens

H.O.R. sirens are a separate company from the more popular Federal siren co.  H.O.R. started in 1934 out of Staten Island, NY.  Being a New York based company, 100's of these sirens were scattered all over New York City and the remaining 4 boroughs for Civil Defense from the 1950's to the 1980's.. Unfortunately, all have been removed by the time of this writing.  Although rare, a few H.O.R. sirens found their way to Long Island. Some are still in service today. Roslyn, West Hempstead, and Amityville are the only fire departments recorded to have used H.O.R. sirens here on the Island.

The H.O.R sirens have a unique look to them. Unlike Federal sirens, the H.O.R. siren only has shroud covers over the top half of the siren leaving the motor casing exposed. The H.O.R. sirens were available in 5 and 7 1/2 horsepower single rotor, and 10 horsepower dual rotor sirens. H.O.R. sirens have a wonderful smooth sound to them. H.O.R. never made it as big as Federal, but they made one hell of a great siren!
